How the Ranking Works

Maximum drawdown is the largest fall from a peak to a later low over the past year, measured on daily closes. Bond, preferred stock, Treasury bill, commodity, currency and multi-asset funds are left out, since cash-like funds barely dip at all and would fill every spot, and so are leveraged and inverse funds and funds with less than a year of history.

One year's drawdown only shows the worst of that year: a fund that held up through a mild market can still fall hard in a crash. Read it with the fund's volatility and 1-year return, and see the Sortino ratio for how much of its risk came from falls.
