How the Ranking Works
Each stock's 1-year return runs from its close a year before its latest one to that latest close. Stocks with less than a year of history are left out, and so are stocks that have barely moved for three months, which usually means a pending buyout has pinned the price to the deal.
A year's biggest winners often ran on one event, such as a drug trial, a takeover bid or a turnaround, and many give much of it back. Read the volatility and maximum drawdown beside the return, and the Sharpe ratio for the return each stock paid per unit of risk.
